Service Innovation Design: Dongseo University Korea
October 20-22, 2008
Call for Papers:
The term “service” does not merely indicate working for the benefit of others in the spirit of self-sacrifice. It is in fact a concept that describes shouldering the burden of time or effort for someone else, and is a valid economic action.
The service industry occupies a [...]

I noticed the other day that I hadn’t received a postcard for Emergence 2008. I didn’t read too much into it, but today I see that they’ve canceled the conference this year.
It’s too bad; they had two solid conferences under their belt and an opportunity to build on that success. A one year break [...]

It looks like Don Norman’s got himself a little of that Service Design religion. He recently gave a lecture on the subject at the Institute of Design in Chicago:

The overarching topic was that service design is the same as what the business world calls “operations” and that there is so much opportunity in this area. [...]

Third Annual ISDN

There are a couple reports trickling in from the third annual International Service Design conference in Northumbria.

Over the last two years, the ISDN series of events has formed an exciting platform to explore the emerging field of Service Design. The very first ISDN, in March 2006, looked at Service Designers - who were these [...]

I’ve been biding my time, waiting for the folks at CIID to post content from their recent Service Design Symposium, but it looks like Nick Marsh has scooped them somehow, so I recommend following the symposium videos he’s ferreting out.

Over the weekend, I decided to visit the Olafur Eliasson exhibit (Take Your Time) on its last day at the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco. It turned out to be a compelling synthesis of experience design principles.

Eliasson nimbly merges art, science, and natural phenomena to create extraordinary multisensory experiences. Challenging the passive nature [...]

This is coming across my radar a little late, but if you happen to be in Copenhagen next month the Institute of Interaction Design is holding a Service Design Symposium on March 6th and 7th, 2008. Scheduled speakers include Bill Moggridge from IDEO, Lavrans Løvlie from Live|Work, Oliver King from Engine and Shelley Evenson from [...]

The organizers of the Emergence conference at Carnegie Mellon University have posted MP3s from last year’s proceedings. They don’t have all of them, but the closing keynote by Richard Buchanan is available and deserves wider play.
It’s difficult to excerpt but he uncovered four boundary themes for service design and tied them into an exploration [...]

A few weeks ago, Core77 blogged about a panel at the InterSections conference with Chris Downs, Gillian Crampton Smith, Heather Martin and Jeremy Myerson that sounded intriguing. Surprisingly, I couldn’t find any other information online. No blog posts, no photos on Flickr; I was beginning to think they made the whole thing up.
The conference organizers [...]

For the culmination of the 2007 Design of the Times in Newcastle, several students from Köln International School of Design have launched an unofficial service design blog to share their photos and observations. They’ve also posted interviews with service designers Alex Webb Allen from live|work and Julia Schaeper from Engine.
Update: John Thackara’s overview [...]
