Research vs Design

There’s an interesting little discussion developing in the comments over at choosenick.com regarding the tension between academia and practice and more broadly between research and design, stemming from the hiring of a research associate for a service design project at Imagination Lancaster.

    thanks Jeff… still I need to say that I have no attempt to put research and practice in a ‘versus’… they are one, only different perspectives…

  2. Agree with Qin. I think the design industry needs to take advantage of the research expertise present in universities. The recent RAE results showed several UK universities excelling in design research that is world-leading. Just as the pharmaceutical industry has a symbiotic relationship with academia, so should the design industry.
